Combat eye wrinkles and fatigue like a Pro- Here's how at every age!
Fine lines and wrinkles near the eye area are some of the first signs of aging. They are one of the first physiological changes to show up due to the delicate nature of the skin around the eyes.
Whether you get Botox or not, using an eye cream for for the delicate eye area is worth it. But, why, what's the big deal? Can't I just laser it or something? Great question. The eye area is especially hard because of how dependent we are on our vision for daily function, the location of our eyes, and the sensitivity of our eyes.
Down time for under eye surgery, or a face lift can be major. Lasers and chemical peels can only get so close to the eyes, due to the light, and risk of eye injury. I promise you taking care of your eyes is one of the best things you can do.
And now at the ripe age of 45, it begins to be super obvious who has been taking care of their eyes! I don't mean this in a judgy way, it's simply to say that taking care of your eyes as early as possible gets "cashed in" for bonus points in your forties and keeps paying off.
Think of your delicate eye area as tissue paper or beautiful butterfly wings. Try not to tug or pull when applying make-up or washing your face. Avoid using make-up products with known toxic ingredients like talc or mica that can easily get into the eye and penetrate the bloodstream.
It's like saving for retirement, start early and a diversified portfolio is best. Here are my top tips for putting the odds in your favor when it comes to aging well with eye wrinkles.
- Squinting- minimize squinting with polarized sunglasses and the bigger the better, from as young as possible. Keep multiple pairs around for easy access especially in the car. Wear your glasses or contacts to avoid squinting. Sunglasses aren't just for Summer, Winter glare as well.
- Tugging- anything we do daily compounds. Prioritize a face wash like Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser that works well to cleanse skin and remove make-up. Double cleanse if you wear make-up to avoid build-up. Notice if you tug while applying eye liner, mascara or other make-up.
- Block- consider tinted windows if you live in high elevation or high sun areas like Arizona, California, Florida, Colorado etc. If you have a history of skin cancer, often this is covered by your insurance.
- Hydration- the eye area often needs MORE hydration than the rest of your face. Using extra hydration for the eye area is wise for dry and combination skin. Oily skin can also benefit from hydration here. Staying hydrated is underrated, and keeps your cells plump like a grape instead of dry like a raisin. Hydration from the inside out is equally as important.
- Products made for the eye area- there are ingredients specifically designed for the eye area that are made to meet the needs of this delicate aging hot spot. The Deweffect Eyebalm is packed with nourishing hydration factors, antioxidants, peptides and skin identical ingredients made for the eye area to help the skin self repair. Retinoids and retinol are proven to stimulate collagen and elastin to minimize skin thinning. Vitamin C has been proven to help prevent future damage, and brighten the under eye area, to name a few.
Here's a break down of what you may have already noticed happening, and what to expect from this aging hot spot. The good news is you can turn back the hands of time and age well by prioritizing your eye area.
As we age you will start to see that our cells aren't working like they used to when we were young. Because our cell turnover starts to slow down, collagen, elastin and the body’s slowing processes start to show the impact of aging. Here are the stages by age group:
- 30s:
- Fine lines and wrinkles begin to appear around the eyes, especially at the outer corners (crow’s feet) 12
- These lines are caused by the loss of collagen and elastin in the skin, as well as repeated facial expressions 12
- The skin becomes thinner and more easily damaged 12
- The skin produces less oil, leading to dryness and flakiness 12
- The skin receives less blood flow and lower glandular activity 12
- Cortisol (associated with stress) causes degradation of collagen, accelerating the aging process 2
- 40s:
- Fine lines and wrinkles become deeper and more noticeable 12
- Undereye bags and dark circles may develop due to the shift and loss of fat under the eyes 12
- These bags and circles can also be caused by fluid retention, allergies and lack of sleep 12
- The skin becomes more saggy and loose due to the loss of skin elasticity and gravity 12
- Age spots may appear due to sun exposure, which triggers the production of pigment 12
- 50s:
- Fine lines and wrinkles become more pronounced and widespread 12
- The skin becomes more dry and rough due to the decreased production of natural oils 12
- The skin becomes more translucent and discolored due to the thinning of the skin and the loss of fat 12
- The skin becomes more prone to bruising and tearing due to the fragility of the blood vessels 12
- The skin becomes more sensitive to environmental factors, such as temperature, humidity and pollution 12
- 60s and beyond:
- Fine lines and wrinkles become deeper and more permanent 12
- The skin becomes more lax and saggy due to the loss of muscle tone and bone density 12
- The skin becomes more dull and uneven due to the reduced cell turnover and renewal 12
- The skin becomes more susceptible to infections and skin cancers due to the weakened immune system 12
- The skin becomes more affected by hormonal changes, such as menopause, which can cause dryness, itching and irritation 12
