The 1 Tip to Make Your Face Look Dewy All Day

The 1 Tip to Make Your Face Look Dewy All Day

I have been using this technique for almost 2 decades, and have been asked by countless dermatologists, skincare pro's, and strangers how I get my skin to look dewy all day without adding any extra products.

I am a minimalist when it comes to life, and especially skincare.  I am not into luxurious long routines.  So if you love Sunday spa days everyday, this may not be for you.  It's super quick and easy.  Even if I wasn't a working Mom of 2 and had infinite money; I would still want the best results with the least amount of steps and effort.  A product or process must be worth my time, money and energy.  I usually have a packed day, but I don't like to reapply make-up throughout the day, except a lipstick.  I prefer to set it and forget it.

Working for the medical dermatology market leader Galderma, for 7 years I knew that moisture is required for healthy skin.  When I was doing my simple skincare routine, it dawned on me how counter intuitive it is to dry our face completely before applying moisturizer.  I began to experiment with this process and landed on a way to lock-in moisture for the entire day and get the MOST out of your products.  The amount of people who have implemented this simple tweak into their strategy is amazing.  It brings me such joy to know that this shift has made such a difference for so many.  The funny part is that in 2023 a trend called "skin flooding" has shown a similar process and went viral on Tik Tok.

However, the original process started here and I call it the re-wet face technique.  This simple, no extra time or money, technique provides instant hydration and improvement of all skin types.  What is it?  It is the concept that we should apply our moisturizer on an "almost dripping wet" face.  If you think about it for a second; it's quite intuitive. "I dry my face, but then I want to hydrate it with moisturizer?" Welcome to the epiphany that almost every single person has when they think it through; including dermatologists and skin care professionals!    I had the same epiphany.  By changing this one element; your skin will immediately be more dewy instantly and lock in moisture for the rest of the day.  It sounds too good to be true, I know.  Don't take my word for it, test it out yourself!  You have nothing to lose.  It takes NO additional time or money.  This simple tweak is an absolute game changer.  Here are a few testimonials, and we have had countless.

Why it works

We are made of 60-70% water, and 90% of aging is due to environmental factors.  When we think environment, we often focus on the sun.  However, the humidity, elevation, blowing air conditioning and heat are all take their toll.  If you think about it, we spend most of our day dehydrating our bodies unintentionally.

Drinking coffee, tea, and soda all dehydrate our bodies and our biggest organ is the skin.  In addition to caffeine, the air humidity and flow have more impact than we realize.  Flying is a perfect example.  I am sure we can all relate to feeling dehydrated when flying.

We are definitely not suggesting that you give up coffee or tea.  Instead, hydrate from the inside out and the outside in.  Drinking water is half of the battle, but keeping the epidermis hydrated has countless benefits.  Think of hydration and moisture as "the metabolism" of our skin.  Moisture to our skin is like oil is to our cars.  Our cars can function on low, dirty oil, but not well.  When our skin isn't well hydrated, the barrier function is compromised.  The epidermis, our outer skin layer, is a miraculous warrior, that doesn't get enough credit.

The epidermis is responsible for protecting our skin and regulating the function of cell turn over.  When skin is properly hydrated the skin can optimally perform: cell turn over, collagen stimulation, cell repair, DNA repair, and minimize TEWL (trans epidermal water loss).  Equally as important, the skin can perform optimal barrier function, when it is well hydrated.  When the barrier function is working well, bad bacteria, disease and infection are kept at bay and the outer skin layer is well balanced.

A few hallmark signs of drastically dehydrated skin are tightness near smile lines, the mouth and eyes.  Skin may also look grey or chalky.  Other dry skin signs can include: redness, irritation, sensitivity, cracking or bleeding. There are skin conditions that are genetic such as ichthyosis and eczema that involve more complex aspects than hydration alone.  However, for all skin types and conditions, hydration is critical.
